Special Educational Needs

Many children have “special educational needs” at some time during their school life.  A child may have learning or behaviour problems or, in fact, be very gifted academically.  Whatever the circumstances we aim to identify children with special needs and to set up programmes to help them as quickly as possible

In order to do this, staff from each year group meet termly with the Special Needs Co-ordinator to review children’s progress.  At these meetings decisions are taken as to whether to include children on our Special Needs Register.  If such a decision is made the parents are informed immediately and invited to come into school to discuss their child’s needs and how we believe we can help.  The termly meetings also ensure that children on the register are kept under regular review.

Our More Able and Talented Co-ordinator will also complete a register of the children who come into this category and ensure that suitable provision is made for them.

If we feel that despite our input the child is still not making satisfactory progress we may request help from SENDIS (Special Educational Needs and Disability Inclusion Service) for more specialist advice, and ultimately the Educational Psychologist.  We can also seek advice and help from speech therapists and behaviour support teachers if the need arises.

Parents are encouraged to come into school if they themselves have a worry about their child even if it is not directly related to school.  We want to work with parents as much as possible in order to get the best out of the children.
