The school’s Mathematics teaching covers the National Curriculum areas of Number, Shape and Space, Measures, Data Handling and Using and Applying Mathematics. It follows the framework laid down in the National Numeracy Strategy. All children study Maths for at least 50 minutes per day. Most lessons each week are taught in sets based on ability in order to stretch and challenge all pupils. The basis for teaching Maths is the three part lesson. Each lesson begins with a short mental activity designed to develop, rehearse and sharpen mental and oral strategies. This is followed by the main part of the lesson consisting of teaching input and activities which children complete as a whole class, group, pair or individual. The final, or plenary, part of the lesson is used to sort out misconceptions and identify progress, to summarise key facts and ideas and what to remember, to make links to other work and discuss the next steps, and to set work to do at home. We emphasise the ability to solve problems in all areas of Mathematics. We aim to make children confident in gathering mathematical information, whether it be by counting or measuring, presenting it in graphs, charts and tables and interpreting such information when it is presented to them. We also aim to teach children to be mathematically confident enough to tackle problems independently. |
